Credit Programs, Poverty Alleviation, and Women's Empowerment: A Case Study from Rural Sri Lanka The provision of micro-credit for micro-enterprise development plays an important role in the alleviation and eradication of poverty. In particular, micro-credit programs have been shown to empower women by providing them access to material resources and increasing their participation in household decision-making. Using research from South Asian countries, some critics, however, claim that male family members control the loans women receive from credit programs and that women are merely a means for them to access money. Even though it is widely believed that these programs are highly effective, there is a debate about the extent to which women are empowered and poverty within these families is reduced. READ MORE.

Asia Seminar for Teachers Organized with Buffalo Public Schools The Asian Studies Program, in collaboration with the UB/Buffalo Public Schools partnership, is organizing a 30-hour National Consortium for Teaching about Asia seminar to provide teachers with content and resources on the geography, religion, history, literature, and art of East Asia. This seminar is open to teachers of any subject who want to effectively incorporate Asia into their curriculum. Teachers can receive a $500 stipend and up to $500 worth of teaching materials. This year, applications from Buffalo Public School teachers will be given priority.
